Description

The two central characters of Tasso's story are the focus of Poussin's painting

which was one of eight pictures presented to Philip IV of Spain by Rubens on his arrival in Madrid in 1628

but the grounds for this are unknown

to whom Niobe has declared herself superior on account of her fecundity

Poussin takes as his starting point two texts from the Book of Samuel

A View of Walton Bridge Frame:natural The two central characters ofA drawing in the Paul Mellon collection and an engraving by A. Walker both seem to relate to a similar painting of 1755 also in the Mellon collection. According to a catalogue of the Hollis collection, Hollis is depicted in the foreground with his friend Thomas Brand, his servant Francesco Giovannini and his dog Malta. Canaletto appears to have depicted himself seated sketching on a low stool and wearing a hat and long gown.
