I generally look for games that have room to breathe, that arent racing for a quick combo kill, and in such games, expensive commanders are certainly playable, especially if they are impactful

All of this combines for an underwhelming commander, especially when compared to Marneus Calgar

Sure the Shock is still a 2 for 1 but Courser's lifegain is usually too valuable to give up like that against that kind of aggressive deck
