In the fall, we empty these feeders out, remove the plastic bee shield, and fill them up with pine shavings or some other absorbent material. The thick styrofoam of the feeder provides some insulation to the hive, and the moisture vented through the open area is absorbed by the pine shavings to prevent dripping on to the colony.
